Stare Juchy is a tiny village in the Polish Mazury lake district. Since the early 80’s almost half of its population left their family homes and emigrated to Iceland. Families and friendships have been split in half, divided between two realities. Although life in the two places follows a different pace and the everyday problems are not alike, memory and homesickness result in a need for staying in touch.
Paweł Ziemilski’s "In Touch" is a formally outstanding depiction of a community split between the rural Polish lake district and an island thousands of miles away: a community whose members stay in touch on a daily basis thanks to modern technologies. The film poses questions about modern-age communication, its limits, and the potential of technology as regards breaching the barriers of space and getting closer to one another. It is, at the same time, a truly interesting formal experiment thanks to which those featured in the film could experience the presence of their loved ones in an even more real way.
The film’s director, Paweł Ziemilski, will share with us his views on the surprising concept he applied, the new media, and the ever-important subject of human relations.
Paweł Ziemilski: Graduate of the Lodz Film&Television School and the Andrzej Wajda Warsaw Film Academy. He received an IDFA award nomination for his 2012 documentary Rogalik. He has won awards at film festivals such as Zagreb Dox, Alcine (Grand Prix), Oberhausen, Beijing, Bucharest or Krakow. Apart from directing, Paweł Ziemilski engages in social animation by holding workshops for underprivileged youth.
Mariusz Wojewoda: head of the Section for Philosophical Anthropology and Cognitive Science at the Silesian University Institute of Psychology. Author of the monography Axiological pluralism and its applications in the contemporary philosophy of religion. His scientific focus is axiology, ethics, neuroethics and philosophy of religion.
